También recibió becas de la Rockefeller Fellowship en 2002 y de la Guggenheim Fellowship en 1986. ‘Cabeza de Vaca’, su primer largometraje narrativo, ha sido comparado por la crítica con ‘Aguirre, la cólera de Dios’, de Werner Herzog.
