Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, Treasurer to King Charles I of Spain, sets sail for Florida on an expedition in 1528. Hunger, disease, thirst, and attacks by the region’s indigenous peoples take their toll on the expeditionaries, so that of the 500 men, only four survive. Captured by the natives, the protagonist becomes the slave of a shaman, from whom he learns magical secrets, thereby gaining his freedom, which leads him into a severe identity crisis.
